To design this unique, landmarked 16 storey high, 102 rooms hotel for the THOMPSON brand’s first Canadian venture, Studio GAIA was given virtual carte blanche to break the rules and create an inspiring hotel that include a signature restaurant, a lobby lounge and bar on entry level. Its dramatic “loft” lobby/lounge offers the perfect marriage of contemporary living and comfort. The atmosphere is casual and relaxed, yet sophisticated. P1 level include an exclusive night club, a private screening room, a 3,000 sq. ft ballroom as well as a well equipped conferencing center. An intimate roof top bar overlooking the sky line of downtown Toronto as well as a 40 ft. long infinity pool with lounging space are both located on the 16th floor.
The lobby was designed to evoke the feel of a living room. The variety of seating options, including intimate seating, group seating, and lounge seating, all provide a platform for a variety of social interaction. Here, the lobby bar becomes the “jewel” of the space with its glowing glass shell and its oversized custom glass-drop chandelier. The 100 foot long, three-dimensional, black and white artwork of the Toronto skyline creates a bold and stunning background to the warm furnishing of the lobby. This contrasts with the rich wood flooring and sophisticated, deep palette furniture in lavish, eclectic fabrics, such as chenille, velvets, metallic velvets, silks and leather. Splashes of luxurious reds and metallic fabrics add playfulness to the space. The dark, charcoal-grey ceiling is pierced with random cutouts of light, a whimsical allusion to the Toronto city skyline, while the custom suspended crystals above the reception desk add another dimension to the space.
